Itchy, tearing, gritty eyes?

With early May here already, central Ohio is in prime allergy season.  Pollen from grasses, trees, and other plants can make springtime miserable for allergy sufferers. Along with a runny nose, nasal congestion, and post-nasal drip, our eyes can be affected by allergies as well.

Common symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis includes itchiness, grittiness, and watery eyes. Eyelids may look somewhat swollen and red as well. As tempting as rubbing your eyes is, it is best to refrain from applying pressure to your eyelids. This can make symptoms worsen over time.  Short-term drops, like steroids, can bring relief quickly. Consistent prescription allergy drop use (like Pazeo or Bepreve) helps allergies sufferers stay comfortable year-round. Over-the-counter drops (like Alaway or Zaditor) can be used for mild symptoms. Applying a cool compress across the eyelids can bring soothing relief.
