What causes computer-use eyestrain?

Mar 27, 2013

Studies show that most people blink half as much as they normally do while using computers and other devices. Reading for extended period can cause eyestrain. Staring at your computer screen for 8 hours won’t cause permanent eye damage, but your eyes may feel dry and tired.

What to do:

  1. Sit about 25 inches away from the screen
  2. Reduce glare
  3. Remind yourself to “blink”
  4. Look away from the computer every 20 minutes
  5. Use artificial tears

Eye strain can be made worse by sleep deprivation and/or incorrect contact lens use. It is important that you take care of your contact lenses properly. This helps avoid eye irritation, swelling, infection and other vision problems.
