Allergies, spring, and itchy eyes

Allergies can leave our eyes itchy, watery, and red

Spring is here!  Do you have eye itchiness, tearing, and redness? You're not alone; you may have allergic conjunctivitis.

Why are allergies so bothersome to our eyes? How can we get relief?

Don't start by rubbing your eyes! This only feels refreshing in the short-term.

Rubbing our eyes excessively can make symptoms worse over time.

When allergens like pollen come in contact with our eyes, our body's immune system kicks in. Small red bumps, known as papillae, form on the inner mucosal surface of our eyelids. These bumps rub on the eye every time we blink or move our eyes. Over time mucus develops.  Sometimes we experience excessive tearing.  Allergic conjunctivitis can range from barely noticeable to very aggravating.

At home, cool compresses can help take the edge off for a short time. Patients may try over-the-counter options; our favorite is Pataday 'extra strength' used once daily in the morning, in both eyes. Others find that oral OTC anti-histamines like Zyrtec or Claritin If over-the-counter options do not take care of the problem, we can help! Call 419-522-3937 to make an appointment.
