August is Children's Eye Health Month

Aug 04, 2020

With August already here, another school year is just around the corner. No one knows exactly what school will look like, be it in-person or in virtual classrooms. In either case, a healthy visual system is crucial for academic success.

We recommend children receive a comprehensive eye exam before entering kindergarten.  Our eyes and the connection between our eyes and brain undergoes remarkable changes in this critical period.  Pediatric eye exams can identify issues like strabismus (eye turning inward or outwards), amblyopia (a "lazy" eye), and other congenital anomalies. If left untreated, these conditions could lead to a permanent decrease in vision that may not be fully correctable with glasses years later.  Intervention for these issues are most effective when the child is young and becomes less effective after their pre-teen years.  Detecting and addressing eye conditions at an early age makes a lifelong impact.
