With Halloween around the corner, Advanced Eye Care Center would like to highlight the dangers of non-prescription “costume” contact lenses.

Non-prescription contacts can usually be purchased online or at Halloween-themed retail stores. While these lenses may provide added realism to a costume, they can have a serious impact on the eye. Blindness, infection, ulceration, pain, and possibly complete loss of vision can occur by wearing these lenses even for a single night. Non-prescription contacts do not have to meet basic contact lens safety requirements.

This means non-prescription costume contact lenses may be constructed with non-breathable materials, stored in toxic solutions, or contaminated with bacteria.

Do your eyes a favor and do not wear non-prescription costume contact lenses.
