Punctal plugs help patients with dry eye by decreasing the rate tears drain away from the eye. Punctal plugs are inserted in our puncta (structure where our tears drain). Our tear lake rests on our lower eyelid and acts as a reservoir to contain our tears. Each time we blink, tears from this tear lake are distributed across the front of our eyes (our corneas). Punctal plugs act like the stopper of a bathtub, which slows the rate that tear lake is drained. This increases the available tears to coat our cornea, improving ocular comfort.
