Excessive tearing is frustrating.  Watering of our eyes blurs our vision and wiping away tears getting annoying.  Why does this happen?

For many patients, our eyes tear up in response to dryness. In other words, dry eye can cause increased tearing. This occurs because the ocular surface is not adequately covered in tears. This usually occurs because our natural tears evaporate too quickly. The lacrimal gland activates when the surface of our eyes is dry.

The lacrimal gland usually produces tears after, for example, chopping onions or watching a sad Lifetime movie. In other words, crying when we would expect our eyes to tear up. The lacrimal gland can also be called into action when our eyes dry out. Dry eye can be made worsened most commonly by circulating air, changing hormones, side-effect of medications, computer/smartphone use, and contact lens wear.
