At-home Amsler grid monitoring is an important part of managing age-related macular degeneration. Macular degeneration affects patients’ central vision over time. While most changes are gradual, some patients can experience rapid changes in vision. The damage that macular degeneration causes can be irreversible. This makes detection of any damage important so patients can receive care to limit damage from getting worse.

To check the Amsler grid, patients should place the grid about one foot away from their eyes. If applicable, patients should use their bifocal or reading glasses when checking their grid. Patients should test each eye separately by covering the eye they are not testing. If distortions, waviness, or parts of the grid are missing, please call 419-521-3937 for prompt evaluation.
