Scleral contact lenses are larger than standard gas permeable (GP) contact lenses. The smallest sclerals are approximately 14.5 mm in diameter, and the largest can be up to 24 mm. Lenses that are 18 mm or smaller are subcategorized as mini-sclerals. The average human cornea is approximately 11.8 mm in diameter so even the smallest scleral contact lens is designed to cover the entire corneal surface. Lenses that are 18 mm or smaller are subcategorized as mini-sclerals.
Are you a good candidate?
Scleral GP lenses are particularly helpful for the following conditions:
- Irregular Corneas – such as keratoconus & other corneal degenerations
- Hard to fit eyes – if your eyes cannot be fit comfortably with traditional GP lenses or the shape of your eye causes the lens to dislodge from your eye, scleral lenses can provide a more stable fit.
- Dry Eyes – If your eyes are too dry to wear conventional lenses, scleral lenses can help! The space between the scleral lens and the cornea acts as a tear reservoir to keep the front of the eye more moist and comfortable.
