I Spy, with my little eye, a Stye!

(Note the reddened upper lid with "whitehead" appearance)

A stye, also known as hordeolum, is a common lid lesion we routinely see at Advanced Eye Care Center. Styes occur when oil glands found on our eyelids become infected. Much like the picture above, the eyelid usually becomes red, tender, warm, and swollen. Styes are more likely to occur when these oil glands become clogged.

Thankfully, several treatments can help patients get rid of their stye:

  • Conservative treatment: Warm compresses (help to unclog the gland) and oral antibiotics
  • Steroid injection (melts away lesion)
  • Excision (numbing the lid up and surgically remove the lesion)

Additionally, certain patients can benefit from lid wipes, which help to decrease the bacterial load on the eyelid
