One controllable risk factor for patients with macular degeneration is ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV light can be a destructive force for patients with chronic exposure to the sun. For patients with macular degeneration, maintaining retinal health is vital for slowing down progression of the disease. Sunglasses shield eyes from damaging UV radiation. Just as smoking is discouraged for patients with macular degeneration, sunglasses should be worn outside, even on cloudy days.

Along with sunglasses, patients with macular degeneration should also check their Amsler grid regularly, abstain from smoking, take AREDS2 multivitamins (we offer TEBS at our front desk), and consume green leafy vegetables.

Summer is almost here; protect your eyes today! Check out our optical to see our great selection of sunglasses!
