Are You at Risk for Glaucoma?

Jan 30, 2019

Glaucoma is a condition where patients’ optic nerves degenerate over time. Most of the time, pressure in the eye is elevated; however, we now know that patients with “normal” eye pressure can suffer from glaucoma. Risk factors for glaucoma include family history of the disease, African American race, age over 60, vascular conditions, and prolonged steroid usage.

Early and even moderate glaucoma typically do not produce any noticeable visual changes. Left unchecked, glaucoma can be potentially blinding. Sadly, once optic nerve damage occurs, it cannot be reversed. Detecting glaucoma early is vital to maintain optimal vision. Once glaucoma is detected, treatment can start to lower eye pressure.
