A Tricky Situtation: Trichiasis

Eyelashes rubbing on the eye?  Ouch!

As seen above, eyelashes rubbing on the surface of the eye is known as trichiasis. The cornea and conjunctiva can become irritated over time.  Other symptoms include tearing, redness, and sensitivity to light. Causes of trichiasis include past eye infection, auto-immune conditions, increasing age, and trauma. Over time, patients may be at risk for corneal abrasions or ulcers which can be painful and degrade vision.

Treatment for mild cases can include our doctors plucking eyelashes with special tweezers. Mild cases can also be helped by gels and artificial tears, to improve lubrication. This is often a temporary fix; eyelashes grow back in 6-8 weeks.

Surgical treatment by Dr. Ballitch may be needed for moderate-to-severe cases or, if patients are seeking a permanent solution. This is an outpatient procedure, known as electrolysis.
