Diabetes and our Eyes

Annual eye exams can help patients with diabetes detect early changes

In 2017 the CDC reported more than 100 million American have diabetes or pre-diabetes (1). Others aren't aware they may already be suffering from diabetes. For our eyes, diabetes can cause vision changes, vision loss, accelerated cataract progression, and glaucoma. The longer one has diabetes, the greater the risk for visual complications. We also know good control of blood sugar helps to reduce the risk of visual impairment.

Since diabetes is widespread and its complications serious, Advanced Eye Care and Surgery Center recommends at least annual eye exams for any patient with diabetes. More frequent follow-up care is indicated if complications are observed. Since early diabetic eye impairments are usually subtle, regular care is the best strategy for maximizing vision. Dr. Ballitch and Dr. Finn also send summarized letters to primary care providers, to ensure they are aware of the eye care you are receiving.
