Eyelid twitching. . .what's that about?

Jul 06, 2021
Have your eyelids ever twitched? Patients are curious why this happens. Others become concerned eyelid twitching may lead to something worse. Thankfully, lid twitching is a relatively common and benign symptom.

Eyelid twitching (eyelid myokymia) occurs spontaneously. The top three triggers of eyelid twitching are stress, lack of sleep, and high caffeine intake. Usually, episodes can last a few minutes and multiple episodes may occur each day. For most patients, no additional treatment is needed (twitching eventually goes away on its own). If patients can decrease triggering causes, eyelid twitching decreases. Patients typically appreciate reassurance that this condition is benign and does not indicate any further problem. If your eyelid starts to twitch, try to relax, go to bed earlier, and cut back on that extra cup of coffee!
