Glaucoma. . .are you at risk?

Mar 11, 2021

Glaucoma is known as the "silent thief of sight."

Glaucoma is a condition where patients’ optic nerves degenerate over time. Most of the time, glaucoma means the pressure in the eye is elevated. We also now know that patients with “normal” eye pressure can suffer from glaucoma. Risk factors for glaucoma include family history of the disease, African American race, age over 60, vascular conditions, and prolonged steroid usage.

Early and even moderate glaucoma typically do not produce any noticeable visual changes. Since glaucoma affects the peripheral vision first, patients seldom notice change in their vision until the condition becomes severe. Left unchecked, glaucoma can be potentially blinding. Sadly, once optic nerve damage occurs, it cannot be reversed. Detecting glaucoma early is vital to maintain optimal vision. Once glaucoma is detected, treatment can start to lower eye pressure.
