Spring has arrived! . . .and so has allergy season

Don't let ocular allergies ruin your day!

Spring is here! Along with warm weather and longer days, unfortunately comes allergy season. Allergies can cause nasal congestion,  a runny nose, a scratchy throat, and post-nasal drip. Allergies also affect our eyes.

Itchiness, tearing, and redness are common symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis.  Sometimes patients believe they have 'pink eye' when their allergies begin to flare up. Why are allergies so bothersome to our eyes? How can we get relief?

When allergens like pollen come in contact with our eyes, our body's immune system kicks in. Small red bumps, known as papillae, form on the inner mucosal surface of our eyelids. These bump rub on the eye every time we blink or move our eyes. Over time mucus can develop or excessive tearing occurs. The condition can range from barely noticeable to very aggravating.

Advanced Eye Care Center offers allergy skin testing to patients. This skin testing is painless and only tests samples that are native to central Ohio. Testing can help identify what causes allergies, helping patients avoid these environments.

At home, cool compresses can help take the edge off for a short time. Patients may try over-the-counter options; our favorite is Pataday 'extra strength' used once daily in the morning, in both eyes.  If over-the-counter options do not take care of the problem, we can help!
