Eye Protection in the Winter?

Feb 03, 2022

The sun can still be harmful to our eyes in the winter.

When eye doctors discuss how the sun can damage our eyes, we often think of warm sunny beaches, going to our childrens' ballgames, fishing, or any number of other activities we enjoy in the summer months. Sunglasses should be a crucial part of outdoor fun in the summer.  Do we also need sunglasses in the winter?

Above, we see snow goggles. Inuit populations in the Artic use snow goggles to block harsh sunlight reflecting off the snow.  Our eyes can experience 'sunburn' as well in summer as well as winter months. Repeated UV damage to our eyes can lead to cataracts, dry eye, and retinal damage.  While modern sunglasses protect our eyes from damaging UV rays, we can look upon the Inuit culture to see how valuable eye protection in snowy months can be.
